UNC involvement with the tobacco industry
(3/18/2017 email from Adam Goldstein)
Additional database memos I came across (great master’s paper for a student - history or public health to examine systematically industry database records…).
1) notable mostly because of the date, 1991, a year after I arrived at UNC as a Fellow. Several leading health care and university leaders attended. Wonder what was discussed (See # 5 below)?.

5) Perhaps the most direct document, indicating how much RJR had given to UNC and their expectations re UNC’s new Smoking Policy- showed that from 1961-1990, RJR gave UNC Chapel Hill $5.4 million, including a $2 million endowment in 1979, and annual matching grants at the time of the memo of $170,000. RJR met with the Dean of Journalism and expressed that the J School would not likely get continued support from RJR is the smoking ban was implemented, Dean indicated that he would bring RJR’s concerns to the Provost’s attention. RJR then came up with the idea for the CEO of RJR to meet with the Chancellor and talk about RJR’s new focus on k-12 public school education. This is in December 1990

In November, 1990, RJR had gotten quite concerned about smoking ban at UNC, singling out UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication
